Assisi - city of Saint Francis

A small city in the Italian Umbria, not far from its capital Perugia, is known throughout the world thanks to the most revered saint in Italy - Francis of Assisi.

Born in 1182 in Assisi, lived his whole life and died there in 1226, he left behind a gigantic spiritual legacy that inspired millions of people through the centuries to follow his teachings and his ideals. No wonder already in 1228, two years after his death, Francis of Assisi by the decision of Pope Gregory IX was canonized by the Catholic Church.

Assisi and its surroundings are full of the memory of St. Francis - this is the church of San Damiano, the deserts of Carceri, the Porzincuola chapel, the Cathedral of San Rufino and, finally, the basilica erected in honor of the Saint and keeping his relics. The complex of buildings of the Basilica of St. Francis is visible even at the entrance to the city and is amazing: it consists of the lower and upper temples, in the decoration of which the outstanding masters of that time took part: Pisano, Cimabue, Giotto, Lorenzetti and others. It seems that the even air in the city is filled with the spirit and teachings of St. Francis.
