Santa Maria Novella Pharmacy

Santa Maria Novella Pharmacy

There are many attractions in Florence: historical buildings, churches, monuments, museums, galleries - you can’t count all of them. Therefore not everyone knows about a small pharmacy Santa Maria Novella, located near the very famous church of the same name, on Via della Scala, 16. However this pharmacy is the oldest in Europe and has more than 400 years of history!

The mentions of the Dominican friars of the church who made and sold "rose water" as a disinfectant date back to 1381. In 1612, the history of the current pharmacy begins, when, in addition to elixirs, essences and balms, the monks also began to sell spices. Already in 1659, the pharmacy received from Ferdinand II Medici the title of the official supplier of the court of the Grand Duke of Tuscany, and in the 18th century, the pharmacy products were sold not only throughout Europe, but also in India and China.

In our time, the Santa Maria Novella pharmacy is not an ordinary pharmacy where medicines, tablets and pills are sold, but a historical pharmacy, where, just like in the previous 400 years, you will find a huge selection of various balms, elixirs, tinctures, essences, prepared with natural herbs and ingredients.

Now, most importantly, the pharmacy is not just a historical landmark, or oldest pharmacy in Europe - it is probably the most beautiful pharmacy in the whole world. Check out these photos - you should definitely come here while in Florence!
