Basilica of Saint Rita in Cascia (Umbria, Italy)

Basilica of Saint Rita in Cascia (Umbria, Italy)

The small town of Cascia in the Umbria region (Italy) is world famous thanks to Saint Rita, whose statue was already erected at the entrance to the city.

With a woman named Rita who lived in this town at the turn of the XIV-XV centuries, miracles began to happen from birth, which spoke of her future religious destiny. Married against her will and then losing her husband in cruel medieval family vendettas, burying both sons who died of illness, Rita experienced all the sorrows, fears and horrors that befell the then man. She felt the need to bring goodness and faith to people, which led her to God and made her a nun.

Already during her lifetime, people flocked to the town to see and talk with St. Rita. The former nun was canonized by the church in 1900, and in 1947 a new church was completed to allow the many pilgrims to venerate the relics of Saint Rita.
